Getting to know the members of a dental care team

What is the dental care team?

A dental team is a group of dental professionals that all work together in running a dental practice. There would be several dental practitioners in a dental care team, and each one would play an essential role in the success of the dental laboratory or clinic. Dental appointments are usually handled by each member of the team and then passed on to the next member until the treatment would be finished.

Who are the members that make up a dental care team?

A licensed dentist. This is the most important member of the team and is the one who has had the most extensive dental training. The dentist would be in charge of most of what happens in the clinic.

A dental assistant. An assistant would usually assist in restorative procedures. Oftentimes, a dental assistant would just be on the team for one year, and when they would gain enough practical knowledge, they would undergo one more year of training before being eligible to become a licensed dentist themselves.

A dental hygienist. A dental hygienist would usually be in charge of the preventive part of patient care. They would have 4-5 years of dental hygiene school under their belts.

Receptionist. This member of the dental care team is not required to have any dental background. But in some cases, the receptionist can also be a licensed nurse. The role of this member of the team would be to see to it that the patient would be ready for the treatment, and also to schedule the patient appointments.

Finding a clinic with a good dental care team is crucial. The skills of the dentist, as well as the friendliness of the other members of the team, can be factors on if your dental appointments would be positive or not.
